A Whisper of Death The Necromancer Saga Paul Barrett Books
As a long time reader and fan of fantasy and sci-fi, I found this novel to be a gust of something new. Usually, with most fantasy novels, the reader is forced to "suspend disbelief" throughout various parts of the story; magic is oftentimes the "deus ex machina" that allows the author to get away with outlandish things and force the plot in certain directions. Not so here! Mr. Barret has created a world where magic is not the main focus of the "magicians" no more than the sword would be the main focus in a story about a warrior. He has created a world where the people and the complex relationships they form are the focus. These are characters that spring to life immediately. It was surprising how real they are and how quickly I came to truly care about them. That was a rare experience and one that I hope others can enjoy through this book as I did.I cannot wait for the next book in the series!!!!

A Whisper of Death The Necromancer Saga Paul Barrett Books Reviews
A Whisper of Death by Paul Barrett is the first book in The Necromancer Saga. It is about Erick Darvaul, a Necromancer, who is on a quest to find the original sorcerers to help destroy the dark ones. I liked this story a lot. It was engaging, exciting, and has me wanting more of Erick's story. I won this book in a giveaway from a blog I follow. All opinions are my own.
A fresh new look on what it means to be a Necromancer, this story captured my attention right away. The main character, Erick, while young and struggling with the death of his parents and suspicion of the towns folks, he does not sink in to an annoying level of self-pity and teen angst. The story moves with a great pace. I gave it 4 stars only because I am not a huge fan of cliffhangers because I am a wretchedly impatient person. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
I met the author at Ravencon when he was speaking on a panel about world building. He talked about how he built the world in this book and the work it took to make it consistent and believeable. He brought up issues about world building that I hadn't even considered or appreciated. It made me appreciate the worlds in my favorite books even more. Later I saw him in the Dealer Room signing books and I decided to buy A Whisper of Death. He warned me it was a bit dark. And it is. However it is also one of the most interesting books I have read in a while. It captured my interest from the first page and when I had finished I realized I was invested in the characters and looked forward to the next book to see how things continue.
I won't add spoilers here but this is a book worth reading. It will go in my permanent collection.
UPDATE 4/24/18 I was at RavenCon this year and Paul was there. I got a chance to talk to him again and the sequel to this book is in the works! He also said that in addition to the second book, he already had an idea for where the characters will go in a third book. I am really looking forward to reading the next book! BTW if you are a fan of Paul's writing check out Knight Errant - which is a lot of fun. Totally different than A Whisper of Death but a good read.
Not my usual genre but this book was highly recommended by a friend. I loved this book! I got caught up in the story and characters and was sad that there was no more when I got to the end. Looking forward to the sequel!
Good read and looking forward to the next book. I normally don't read this type of book but it looked interesting and it was really good. Kept me interested and entertained. I would recommend to anyone.
An awesome and fast paced book. Looking forward to the second book in this series. Erick and his familiar Blink are very well done and well developed. It will be cool to see how they grow and I look forward to following them as their adventures continue. I highly recommend this book for anybody.
Great book! The story, and characters, are well rounded. I enjoyed the break from the 'Necromancy is always evil' trope. The author threats the necromancy power as a dangerous power (with a slightly evil bent) with the temptation for abuse. All powers in any story should (in my opinion) have that temptation built in. I'm really looking forward to the next book!
