The Adventures of Robin Hood of Great Renown in Nottinghamshire is an 1883 novel by the American illustrator and writer Howard Pyle. Consisting of a series of episodes in the story of the English outlaw Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men, the novel compiles traditional material into a coherent narrative in a colorful, invented "old English" idiom that preserves some flavor of the ballads, and adapts it for children. The novel is notable for taking the subject of Robin Hood, which had been increasingly popular through the 19th century, in a new direction that influenced later writers, artists, and filmmakers through the next century.

This novel of Robin's adventures was a wonderful story filled with fun. I didn't like the ending, but loved the character Robin that the author portrayed who was a gentleman and a kind soul. I would recommend this book to all who love the tale of Robin Hood.
I found this book to be truly funny because of the over-the-top writing style (which I guess was normal a hundred years ago or whenever this was first published.) I've never seen so many uses of the word 'merry' on one page. And yes, there IS a dingly dell! But despite, or possibly just alongside, the goofy cutsyness of the descriptive style, this book is pretty fun to read. There are a lot of good adventures and it moves right along. My 12-year-old son not only liked it, he couldn't figure out why I thought the writing was funny. So go figure. Of all the free books for , this was one of my favorites and definitely in the top 5.
This is a great Robin Hood story for Free for our ebooks! It is interesting from start to finish. I hated to see it end. If you have not actually read a book about Robin Hood ...you should. The TV shows and movies are good, but it seemed so much clearer to understand how he met his band of men and what and how they did what they did. Yes, this is a book to read!
This book brought me back to the days of my middle schooling era. I so enjoyed reading of Robin Hood when I was at age 12, that
when, in the seventh, 8th and ninth grades,the several teachers asked us to read and write a book report, I wrote 3 of them... one each year for each of those three years. all on Robin Hood...and now, 2 years from getting to 90 years of age, I still enjoyed the tale...
The comic description of Robin Hodd by my pre teen pals was that "he stole from the rich and gave it to the poor....it evolved quickly... us kids decided that it might best have been.."he stole from the rich and he kept it for himself"
And so this Arrow, straight and true, has flown into the night, like so many great men, before him and after him. So we to will fly to join him, but not until our Merry Adventure has been run. Robin of Sherwood, we are your Merry Men, until Our King, returns us all, to His Green Glen. Sempre Avanti, Wild At Heart.
If you're looking for the best then read this version by Howard Pyle who wrote this with children in mind. Be prepared though. The speech of all the characters is quite old-English so some may have a hard time understanding it. Saying that I just read this to our 11 and 8 year old and they were gripped. The chapters are long so we only read one a day but they were eager to know what was going to happen next.
If you have a child that is into archery then the stories of Robin's feats with his bow and arrows will have them outside practicing. You will read of them in taverns drinking Malmsey (ale). Robin Hood and his men were outlaws who believed in taking from the rich and giving to the poor or keeping some for themselves. Until the fight with Guy Gisbourne towards the end which was a fight to the death, Robin was not interested in killing people. He wanted to test their strength and agility etc. Of course, how he shows up disguised in front of the Sheriff of Nottingham more than once is hilarious! Unlike the movies, Maid Marian is just given a passing mention in the book.
Warning The ending is very sad and our 8 year old daughter cried. After all Robin's adventures and escapes, his demise at the end was so very unlike the rest of his life. Please also note there are NO pictures in this book.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - should be in every family library.
If you ever get a chance to go visit Sherwood Forest and Kirklees Priory in England, do so!
This book has all of the Robin Hood stories I've heard before, plus a few I didn't know, all strung together in a continuous narrative, with each story having its own section. It ends bittersweetly, as most good books do. The language is archaic at times, and I couldn't find information about the Saxon saints, but that doesn't detract from the story at all.
Although many of the tales and adventures share reoccurring elements, it is the sense of triumphant innocence in the face of rampant corruption which lends vitality. It is a concept which transcended the time in which the stories first took place and retains its poignancy to the current age. Neither the sceptical, modern mind nor career-adult need bother themselves with this book. It's simple truths and enjoyment will only be revealed to beautifully naive.
